Good cause to band together

Disadvantaged kids across the state benefit as local musicians and artists stage an all day showcase in Fremantle

May 30, 2010, PERTH, WA – The best of Perth’s established and emerging musicians and artists will band together in the second Artists for Education spearheaded by Perth-based charity VOW, with all proceeds assisting disadvantaged kids across WA.

The community friendly event, like the CD they are promoting, will present a selection of local talent, including Nathan Gaunt, The China Blue Experiment (featuring Fremantle’s renown Simon Kelly), Moana Dreaming, Bryte MC (winner 2009 WAMI Best Indigenous Hip-Hop), The Blue Finish, Toby and Sneaky Weasel Gang.

Its festival vibe will encompass busking, live theatre with The Dream Logic Collective, juggling, pop opera (popra) with Veronica Santoro, dance, African drumming by Wasamba, a photography expo, short film screenings, interactive theatre and art instillations.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to let people know about VOW, about what we’re doing for the kids,” Mr Thornber said.

In the past this has included sponsoring school kids in SE Asia and establishing a school in China, an initiative gaining VOW Vice Chair Dr Bernadette Poynter recognition as a finalist in the 2010 WA Young Australian of the Year.

The 2010 Artists for Education will fund a series of music workshops aimed at youth in remote indigenous communities, the “Desert Feet Tour”.

The festival erupts on the 30th of May at Fremantle’s Railway Hotel, running from noon to 10pm. This event is run by volunteers, supported by the John Curtin Leadership Academy, and features exclusively local performers and artists. All proceeds go to VOW’s charity causes.

The associated CD features Triple J favourites The Drones, The Preytells and The Kill Devil Hills, and local legend Nathan Gaunt and the promising The Chemist. It also features VOW’s founder, Damien Thornber with his band The Orphans.

VOW is an entirely volunteer run organisation.

This is a community event. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Entry is $24 on the door; includes the Artist for Education CD and access to all the acts, events and galleries. Artists for Education support responsible drinking.
